Bleeding, Blood Clots, Ischemic Stroke Xarelto Side Effects Investigation

Janssen Pharmaceutical, manufacturer of a popular anticoagulant Xarelto (rivaroxaban), and co-maker Bayer Healthcare, are facing several lawsuits associated with serious side effects of fatal internal bleeding. Released in 2011, Xarelto has been one of the most prescribed blood thinners. It is widely recommended to help prevent blood clots in patients suffering from stroke, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis as well as those who have recently undergone a hip or knee replacement surgery. Patients nationwide are claiming that these pharmaceutical companies failed to warn both patients and the medical community regarding the increased risks of fatal internal bleeding when under Xarelto medication. Allegations are that internal bleeding could have been avoided or treated if there had been complete and adequate warnings of the risk.

Xarelto has been linked to serious side effects such as:

  • decreased hemoglobin
  • Hematoma (a mass in the blood)
  • Dyspnea (difficulty breathing)
  • peripheral edema (swelling of the lower limbs)

It is alleged that the most complicated health risk is severe internal bleeding that can possibly result in death. Patients allege the type of internal bleeding caused by Xarelto is irreversible and has no known cure. I is also alleged that the drug’s manufacturers over-advertised their product by over promoting Xarelto as a safe, effective and easy-to-use medication compared to other medicinal drugs but failed to mention in the advertisements that there is no cure for its serious internal bleeding side effect. As of the moment, there has not been a recall of Xarelto but in 2014, the FDA ordered the manufacturers of Xarelto to add a boxed warning in the label to increase public awareness regarding the dangerous and life-threatening bleeding events that can occur. It is alleged that one of the key problems with Xarelto is that the internal bleeding injuries associated with the medication can be difficult to detect. In worst cases, victims may need several pints of blood if not a complete blood transfusion before the unstoppable bleeding could be clogged or blocked.

Types of internal bleeding associated with Xarelto may include any of the following:

  • Ischemic Stroke – caused by a blood clot preventing blood from reaching the brain
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke – bleeding inside the brain
  • Spinal Hematoma – blood clot around the spine
  • Rectal Bleeding – bleeding inside the colon
  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding – bleeding inside the large or small intestine
