In July 2015 the Consumer Product Safety Commission along with Ikea made available free wall mounting repair kits for all MALM chests and dressers. This repair program came after reports of 2 deaths and 41 tip over incidences resulting in 19 injuries to children between the ages of 19 months and 10 years old. All incidences occurred with dressers and chests that were not properly mounted to the wall and tipped over. In June 2016, after finding out about a February 2016 3rd child fatality, Ikea announced a voluntary recalled on millions of 3,4,5,and 6 drawer MALM chests and dressers in the USA and Canada. Ikea urges consumers to either return the unstable dressers and will issue a full or partial refund or will provide the customer with a free wall-anchoring repair kit. Consumers are warned to immediately stop using the chests or dressers, and keep them away from children, until they are properly anchored to the wall or returned. Ikea warns if they are not properly anchored to the wall, they are not stable and could tip and result in injury or death to children. The MALM dressers and chests were sold between 2002 through June 2016 ranging in price from $70.00 to $200.00 dollars. Childrens dressers and chests are taller than 23.5 inches and the adult models are taller than 29.5 inches and do not meet the US voluntary standards for safety.
